Preparing Your Own Flag Pole For Use With the Chokehold Marine Universal Flagpole Fitting
Please read this entire guide carefully before proceeding. This guide provides instructions for adapting your own flag pole for use with the Chokehold Marine Custom Flag Pole Mount. Because we cannot supervise or control the work you perform, these instructions are for guidance only.
Power tools are required for preparation. If you don't have prior experience with power tools, we recommend purchasing a Chokehold Marine Flag Pole, which is specifically designed for our mount system.
You are responsible for ensuring your flag pole is strong enough for its intended use. If you're unsure about your pole's strength, we recommend checking with its manufacturer.
Chokehold Marine is not liable for any damage to the mount or your flag pole resulting from improper preparation, installation, or misuse of the mount system. Proceed at your own risk.
Preparation Steps
- Secure the fitting: Ensure the custom flag pole fitting is screwed securely into your Chokehold Marine flag mount.
- Position the mount: Place your Chokehold Marine flag mount on a level surface.
- Remove the pin: Take out the security pin from the fitting.
- Insert flag pole: Insert your flag pole into the mount until it's properly seated. Your flag pole's diameter cannot exceed 1.13 inches.
- Mark for drilling: Using the pin holes on the mount as guides, mark your flag pole. These marks indicate where you'll drill to allow the security pin to pass through. We don't recommend or endorse using unsecured flag poles.
- Remove flag pole: Take your flag pole out of the mount.
- Drill the hole: Using a ¼" drill bit, drill a single, straight hole through your flag pole. We recommend using a drill press or securely fastening the pole before drilling.
Finalizing Installation
- Reinsert flag pole: Carefully reinsert your flag pole into the mount, ensuring it's properly seated.
- Insert security pin: Align the newly drilled hole on your flag pole with the holes on the mount fitting, and then insert the security pin.
Storage Recommendation
- Separate fitting and pole for storage: Don’t store the flag pole with the fitting still attached. Leave the fitting on the mount instead.
Setting Up Your Chokehold Marine Flag Mount:
Follow these steps to securely attach your Chokehold Marine Flag Mount to your boat's pylon or tow head.
- Remove the collar: Turn the teal collar counter-clockwise until it clears the mount's assembly shell, then set it aside.
- Position the mount: Place the mount over your boat's pylon or tow head, adjusting the threaded grip blocks as needed.
- Reseat grip blocks: Ensure all threaded grip blocks are properly seated within the assembly shell.
- Align grip blocks: Make sure the threaded grip blocks rest evenly against the mount's bottom lip and that all threads are aligned. This alignment is crucial to prevent cross-threading, which can damage your mount.
-
Reattach collar: With the grip blocks aligned, place the collar back onto the mount and turn it clockwise to screw it on.
Due to the precision machining of Chokehold Marine mounts, the collar should turn with very little resistance when the grip blocks are properly seated and aligned. If you encounter significant force, it's likely cross-threading has occurred. Unscrew the collar and repeat steps 4–5 until it catches properly. Never force the collar, as this will damage the threads. - Continue threading: Once the collar is properly threaded onto the grip blocks, you'll notice it has vertical movement relative to the mount's assembly shell. This is normal. Continue screwing the collar clockwise.
- Secure the mount: Continue turning the collar until it makes contact with the bottom lip of the mount. Keep turning the collar; this action raises the grip blocks inside the assembly shell. Don't stop until the grip blocks make firm contact with the bottom of your boat's pylon or tow head. Ensure a tight and secure connection before proceeding.
If Using the Universal Flag Mount Fitting (with your own Flag Pole):
These steps assume your flag pole has been modified for use with the Chokehold Marine Flag Pole Mount System. Refer to the "Installing Your Custom Flag Pole with the Chokehold Marine Mount" instructions included with your mount system or on our website at www.chokeholdmarine.com before proceeding.
- Remove security pin: Pull the triangular tab on the non-capped end of the security pin over the tip of the pin to remove it.
- Insert flag pole: Insert your modified flag pole into the flag pole insert.
- Align holes: Align the through-hole on your flag pole with the hole on the flag pole insert.
- Reinsert pin: Reinsert the security pin, locking it in place by pulling the triangular tab on the non-capped end of the security pin over the tip of the pin (ensure the tip of the pin rests inside the triangular tab).
- Let your flag fly!
If Using the Chokehold Marine Flag Pole:
The Chokehold Marine Flag Pole is meticulously designed for seamless, "plug-and-play" functionality with your mount system.
- Remove universal insert: Use the attached security pin as a handle and turn the universal flag pole insert counter-clockwise to remove it from the mount.
- Screw in flag pole: Screw your Chokehold Marine flag pole into the mount's central flange column. We recommend doing this without an attached flag and with the flag pole in its collapsed position.
- Hand tighten: Hand-tighten the flag pole until its pressure distribution plate makes firm contact with the mount's central flange column.
- Attach flag (top): Clip the top eyelet of your flag to the flag pole's anchor ring.
-
Extend flag pole: Raise your flag to the desired height by extending the flag pole's nested segments. To do this, release each segment's friction lock by turning it counter-clockwise, extend the segment, then turn the lock clockwise to secure it.
Friction locks should only be hand-tightened and require only a 1/4 to 1/2 turn to lock/unlock. Do not disassemble nested segments, as this will damage the locking mechanism and compromise the flagpole's integrity. - Attach flag (bottom): Once the flag pole is at your desired height, finish mounting your flag by clipping its bottom eyelet to the included retainer strap. Attach the strap to the flagpole by wrapping it tightly around one of the nested segments and gripping it to ensure the hook and loop fasteners along its length adhered properly.
- Enjoy making your stand!
